A Word to The
We recently had the occasion to see our
match shooting friend who we noticed was
missing a digit on his right pinkie finger!
I though, "Hmm, I never noticed the end
of his finger was missing before," and made
a mental note to ask about it sometime later.
However, I didn't have to ask, because
our friend soon told us about his unfortunate
accident when cleaning his Davis 380 he
had recently been given. Free gun. Whoopie...
Well we'll see.
As you may know Davis' quality control
was lacking when they made the 380s, and
we all know those guns are not top drawer;
however, there are a lot of Davis 380s out
in the world that are functioning well enough,
By the way, I must tell you that our friend
has a lifetime of experience and expertise
in shooting, gun safety and military ordinance!
He's experienced, careful and an all around
great guy. So, if a moment of indescretion
can happen to him, it can happen to anybody.
While performing a function test, our friend
closed the slide with live ammo in that
little old Davis 380 (instead of using a
snap cap - because he didn't have a snap
cap in 380), and due to a problem with the
firing pin, the damn thing went off and
the bullet smashed through the end of his
pinkie finger that was in front of the barrel!
Then, the bullet continued out through the
wall of his house, and came to rest out
on the walkway in the yard
Needless to say, but I will say it anyway,
the trip to the hospital, permanent damage
and disability (you use your pinkie a LOT!)
and damage were easily preventable. And,
bummer but damage and regrets are everlasting.
Therefore, here are our words of wisdom...
Always use snap caps!
you have children at home? Check That Your Guns Are Safely
From National Shooting Sports Foundation - The Golden
Rules of gun safety deal with handling firearms, but safely
storing firearms is critically important as well, especially
during summertime when children may be at home or at a friend's
home--unsupervised. In this video, NSSF outlines procedures
for safely storing firearms in the home to make sure that
children and other unauthorized users cannot access them.
NSSF's Project ChildSafe program works to meet that goal nationwide
by providing free firearm safety kits to gun owners through
law enforcement partners.
If you're working all day and your kids are home
unsupervised for even part of the day, you will want to think
about how to secure all your household's guns. Even your air
rifles, because you may have ordinances that your kids can
run afoul of if they decide they want to go out and have some
fun with them. Early this week we caught our neighbor's teenager
and his 2 buddies out behind our house shooting up our bee
hive! We told the kids we were giving them a "pass"
just once, but if their parents had been more supervisory,
we would have appreciated it. In this case, we hope "All's
Well That Ends Well," as Rocky the Flying Squirrel sez. --
